In our last post, we talked about several different types of metal fabrication. As a refresher, metal fabrication falls into the manufacturing industry and is the process of creating metal parts and pieces by producing sheet metal and shaping it into the correct form. Metal fabrication involves many actions and activities to ensure the metal is properly fashioned. Metal fabrication allows for all sorts of things to exist including cars and technologies. Continue reading to learn more about some of the types of metal fabrication that exist.
Different Types Of Metal Fabrication
In the last article, it was discussed that there are many different types of metal fabrication. The metal manufacturing techniques that were discussed included casting, forging, punching, cutting, and welding. However, there are several more processes that are used in metal production. These include drawing, drilling, forming, extrusion, and stamping. Continue reading to learn more about these metal fabrication methods.
Drawing
One type of metal fabrication is drawing. This is not the type of drawing you create with a pen or a crayon. Drawing is the process of stretching a piece of metal so that it is the right size or shape for the kind of product that is being manufactured. Usually, the metal is pulled using tensile force from a machine. Drawing is typically used to make metal thinner.
Drilling
Drilling is a more straightforward kind of metal production. It involves taking a drill and pushing it through the metal piece to create a hole. Punching is a more common way to create holes using metal fabrication because it is more uniform.
Forming
Forming is the process of molding and bending a piece of metal into place. Usually, the metal will still be hot in this stage to allow it to be malleable. Forming involves using a machine to press, pull and push a piece of metal until it reaches the desired shape of the person forming the metal. Forming is used as a part of several other metal fabrication processes. Often, forming is completed by putting pressure on the metal and using clamps and hammers to get the metal into place.
Extrusion
Extrusion is a special type of metal manfacturing. It is the process that is used to create circular or round pieces of metal. Extrusion allows for objects such as pipes, wires, and car parts. The extrusion process involves taking metal and forcing it through a die or an orifice that shapes it into a cylinder. As the metal experiences the pressure of going through the die, it becomes rounded.
Stamping
The last type of metal fabrication that will be discussed in this article is stamping. Stamping is similar to another metal making procedure called punching. However, while punching will go all the way through the piece of metal to create a hole, stamping will only go partially through the metal. The purpose of stamping is to make a depression in the metal. A stamp is typically a word or an image on the side of a piece of metal. Stamps are typically made using a hammer or a press.
